I wrote about the car show in the San Diego Country Estates that took place in September 2011.

"Car show and 50's rock draws some snappy models"

Jack Schwartz, who is the proud owner of a 1937 Ford that he's had since 1996, has been coming to this car show since the beginning. The car was originally not more than a motor and some tires, Schwartz said, but he's done a lot to it since then. The '37 Ford also has a pancake hood, suicide doors, teardrop headlights in the fenders and split windows.

"The paint job is about12 or 13 years old, but it's got about as many bells and whistles as I could put on it," Schwartz said. When asked why it didn't have any door handles, he smiled and said, "Everything is electric."

One of the most interesting stories involving his '37 Ford took place during his first time at the Del Mar car show. He ended up parking it inside the building for the car show, where it sat for four days. He later realized the starter had gone out right after he parked it, and after the four days were up, he had to call AAA to come tow his car.

"There were special trailers lined up to come pick up all these other really nice cars," Schwartz said, "and then there was the tow truck among them to come get mine. I couldn't stop laughing."

Mal Crump is the owner of a 1964 Pontiac GTO and this was his fourth year at the San Diego Country Estates car show. In case anyone doubts who owns this car, the license plate reads, 'Mal's 64'.

"One of my favorite things about this car is the size of the engine," Crump said. "I went from having 325 horsepower to 502 horsepower."

He's had his car for almost eight years but drives it only two or three times a year. When asked if he had a name for his car, he laughed and said, "Its name is financial sponge."

Louie Maldonado, who drives his car on a regular basis, said his 1956 Chevy 210 is a work in progress.

"I saved up for two years for this car," Maldonado said. "As soon as I test drove it, I loved it. I named her Daisy the second day."

He showed off a small scratch from where his car was hit from behind. What became of the other car? "Their bumper fell off." He said one of his favorite things about Daisy is that everything is customizable and he is constantly changing the look of the car. When asked what kind of gas mileage he gets, he laughed. "Gas mileage? What's that?"
