Kendra Wilkinson: Sliding Into Home (Book Review)

So who ever guessed I would buy that very book she is holding? I love to read, but every time I saw The Girls Next Door on, I would cringe. Then when I saw Kendra on the E! channel, all I ever saw her doing was complaining that she was still fat from having the baby. So naturally, I thought this book would suck. But I just couldn't not read it. Curiosity got the best of me.

I purchased it on amazon for something a lot less than the original $25. And lo and behold...I actually liked it. I'm not saying that you will too, but I did. The book is very conversational and really sounds like her talking on paper. So, if you're looking for a piece of literature with perfect grammar and great metaphors, forget it. This is like a casual interview about her life, not to say it wasn't fun to read. I finished it in less than 3 days.

One of the things that I didn't find that fascinating was Kendra's life as a wild child. It seems like such a typical story. I also have read Jenna Jameson's book, How To Make Love Like a Porn Star, and while I liked that book as well, it felt so similar. They both grew up with only one parent, for different reasons. They both took way too much of their drug of choice (Kendra- cocaine, Jenna- meth-amphetamine) and both almost overdosed. They both had stripping as a career at one point. They both got into trouble and would steal and lie and cheat. They both had curiosity about sex and gave it to very wrong men. So you start to wonder, what's the difference?

Jenna's story seemed much more heartbreaking and dramatic to me. When I was reading Kendra's book, I was cracking up several times. Really, there are some hilarious things she says in there. She mentions her first time taking a laxative and how she handled that. I love that, being a female, she isn't embarrassed to talk about topics like that so casually and humorously. She also talked about what was going through her head when some "wtf?!" moments came along, such as her first time in bed with Hef, and some other girls from the mansion, and about what was really going on behind the scenes of The Girls Next Door

I always thought Kendra was just some idiot, along with her co-stars. But the insight she gives on how different her life really was, is amazing! I never thought someone could feel bored at the Playboy Mansion. She mentions how she felt lost and kind of thrown into her life there. I had just assumed someone sat her down and said, "Ok, you will be living here, having sex at these times, and will make this much money. These are activities you will be doing during the week and here are some people you can become friends with." Not at all. I was also entertained by how she thought of the other girls as stuck up Barbie's. I thought she was just like that, but apparently not. Her wording and honesty in this book is great.

All in all, I would say this book is worth a shot. It's an easy, casual read, and is none-the-less entertaining. This girl even tried to overdose on toothpaste! Sure, it's not full of scholarly terms and highlighted life lessons, but you will learn about the girl she really is and what she thinks of her mistakes in the past. It is a typical story of a young woman and her struggles, with the usual stuff, but the book definitely has Kendra's personality all over it. She is extremely honest, frighteningly fearless, and really crazy in a funny and outrageous way. And it's great that even as fame and fortune came into her life, her family never lost their heads. Her mom still seems so strict and conservative, which I think is great.

My favorite paragraph of the book:
"The whole time leading up to that night at the mansion, my family had no idea I was stripping. My mom thought Zack was working hard and paying for everything. In fact, she still thinks that, unless she is reading this book right now---in which case, sorry, Mom."

Oh, and there's the part when she says "Clock in. clock out. Or in this case, cock in, cock out."
She really does have a great sense of humor about everything.
